Congratulations on the 11th floor for one of the oldest citizens in the district
Helene Elisabeth Obenauer celebrated a very special birthday in Groß-Gerau : the centenarian turned 105. Among those offering their congratulations were First County Councilor Adil Oyan and Groß-Gerau's Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau. On her actual birthday, January 24th, the centenarian wasn't feeling quite herself, so the personal visit and congratulations were made up for a few days later.
At 105 years old, Helene Elisabeth Obenauer is one of the oldest residents in the Groß-Gerau district. For more than 30 years, she has lived in the Auf Esch neighborhood, high up on the eleventh floor of an apartment building, together with her 95-year-old sister. As her great-nephew Hans-Joachim Horndasch reports, the two sisters have been inseparable since childhood. They receive support from a housekeeper who comes by in the morning and evening. The sisters spend the rest of the day independently in their familiar apartment.
For the belated birthday celebration, the family had prepared a lovingly decorated coffee table. The centerpiece was a large cheesecake with the number 105, framed by two roses. Next to it were photographs of the birthday cakes from the 100th to the 104th birthdays, offering a small chronicle of the family's enduring bond. All the cakes were made by the same pastry chef, who, according to the family, is delighted to celebrate another milestone birthday each year.
For many years, Helene Elisabeth Obenauer worked in the office of the former Fagro press and stamping plant in Groß-Gerau. The visit from well-wishers ended with heartfelt words and great appreciation. Her 105th birthday demonstrated that such an anniversary can also be celebrated in a quiet atmosphere. The sisters declined to reveal any special secret to their success. With a twinkle in her eye, her great-nephew remarked that they had both remained independent throughout their lives. The view from the eleventh floor overlooking the pheasantry remains a daily part of the centenarian's routine.
