The science and congress center is an important meeting place for research, business and culture
The darmstadtium – Darmstadt Science and Congress Centre is celebrating its 18th anniversary . Since its official opening on December 6, 2007, the congress centre has developed into a central venue for science, business and culture in Darmstadt.
The project was initiated by a city council resolution on January 19, 2000 , to construct a center for science and conferences. At the time, Darmstadt was the first municipality in Germany to realize a conference center in cooperation with a university. The project was developed in close collaboration with the Technical University of Darmstadt and with the support of the state of Hesse.
“The darmstadtium stands for both the science city of Darmstadt and the science location of Darmstadt – and thus for innovation and the highest conference quality for 18 years,” explains Mayor and Chairman of the Supervisory Board Hanno Benz.
Record sales and more than 112,000 guests in 2025
In 2025, the convention center achieved its highest event revenue in history, €6.5 million in sales 169 events took place, attracting 112,268 guests .
Despite rising energy prices and general cost increases, the operator reports that the city's operating subsidy has remained stable at €3.1 million . Part of these funds is used for debt service on construction costs and for investments. In addition, approximately €240,000 back to the city of Darmstadt through property taxes and levies.
Over 4,800 events since opening
Since 2007, more than 4,800 events , attracting a total of approximately 2.5 million visitors . About 70 percent of these were scientific conferences, congresses, seminars, or meetings.
International corporate events also play an important role. Darmstadt's location in close proximity to Frankfurt International Airport makes the convention center particularly attractive for international meetings from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
In addition to economic and scientific events, the cultural sector is also regaining importance. The number of cultural events rose from 16 in 2022 to 39 in 2025. At the same time, visitor numbers in this segment quadrupled.
Sustainability and digital infrastructure as a trademark
A special feature of the Darmstadtium is its focus on sustainability. In 2013, the building became the first European congress center the DGNB Silver certificate for sustainable building.
Furthermore, the convention center boasts a high-performance digital infrastructure. A direct connection to the university's computer center and thus to the DE-CIX internet exchange point ensures particularly efficient network technology.
“In the science city of Darmstadt, exchange is important to us. Both TU Darmstadt and other scientific institutions therefore like to use the darmstadtium as an ideal place for working together and networking,” explains Tanja Brühl.

The operating company of the darmstadtium now manages several event venues in Darmstadt. The Centralstation Darmstadt has also been part of the group since 2014.
Since 2019, the company has also taken over the management of other event venues, including the Orangerie Darmstadt, the Bürgermeister-Pohl-Haus, the Ernst-Ludwig-Saal, the Justus-Liebig-Haus Darmstadt and the Zum Goldenen Löwen Darmstadt.
Together, these seven venues form a network that more than 1,100 events .
