In the future, the Friends of the Wedding Tower will be special permits authorized members temporary access . This will allow the reliable operation of the Wedding Tower, including souvenir sales, to continue without compromising protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Mathildenhöhe site
"Returning to the original state presented a challenge for the support group—especially for the fulfillment of its volunteer work around the UNESCO World Heritage Mathildenhöhe," explained Paul Georg Wandrey, head of the traffic department and registrar . "Together, we found ways to reconcile the necessary accessibility of the Wedding Tower with the protection of the World Heritage site."
During the approximately three-year construction period of the east extension at Alice Hospital, Olbrichweg was used as a construction site access road. After completion of the work, the street was closed to motorized traffic again at the end of August and has since been accessible to pedestrians and cyclists
Background: Wedding Tower Support Group
The Wedding Tower Support Association was founded in 1982 to preserve and revitalize this Darmstadt landmark. Since 1986, the non-profit organization has operated the tower's publicly accessible areas based on a usage agreement with the city. This includes operating the elevator , selling souvenirs , and providing the wedding room on the fifth floor for civil weddings .
