An inclusive play area for all generations was officially opened – financed by state funding
Under bright sunshine and with around 80 guests in attendance, the extensively redesigned Haydnstraße adventure playground in Weiterstadt been reopened. Mayor Ralf Möller, together with representatives from city politics and administration, as well as a class from the Anna Freud School, welcomed the visitors to the festive opening – with a special thank you in the form of a scoop of ice cream from a specially hired ice cream truck.
Including a play and meeting area covering 3,753 square meters
The redesign of the 3,753 square meter area took approximately ten weeks. The costs, amounting to €294,000, were fully covered by the "Regional Equalization of Burdens" funding program of the state of Hesse . Due to the extreme drought in the spring, only the establishment of the lawns was delayed – all other construction phases proceeded according to plan.
The new playing area impresses with its inclusive overall concept:
- Three barrier-free entrances
- Three different swing sets with barrier-free access
- Spacious climbing facility with a 6-meter-high tower, bridges, and ropes
- Two slides of different heights
- 20-meter-long double cable car
- 110 meters of barrier-free pathways with guidance systems
- Numerous wheelchair-accessible seats
- Open pavilion for encounters and intergenerational exchange
Participation of schools and citizens
The entire planning process was participatory and inclusive Disability organizations, schools, and municipal institutions contributed valuable input from the early planning stages . Feedback from a public workshop was directly incorporated into the final plan.
A class from the Anna Freud School City of the Future " project Albrecht Dürer School provided suggestions – such as the construction of the pavilion as a meeting place for young and old.
Outlook: Third construction phase in planning
In a planned third construction phase, the toddler play area will be expanded , additional greenery planted , and shade structures created. The aim is to further develop an inclusive meeting place for all generations in Weiterstadt
