Afghan cuisine and insights into a closed country
Little is known about Afghanistan in this country - even less about everyday life in a totalitarian state . The author Farsane Baraki recently visited the country and will talk about her experiences. A special focus lies on the Afghan eating culture , which is often shaped by purely vegetable nutrition - not out of conviction, but for economic necessity. Many people cannot afford meat or animal products, so that a varied vegan cuisine based on rice, bread, vegetables and legumes has arisen.
In her book, Baraki shows how a colorful and aromatic cuisine can be conjured up from a few ingredients - accompanied by traditional soups, fruit, nuts, pistachios and pine nuts. The dishes not only reflect the taste, but also the cultural identity of Afghanistan.
About the author and her connection to Afghanistan
Farsane Baraki was born in Afghanistan and has lived in Germany for 30 years . She works at the Helmholtz Institute GSI in Wixhausen . Her mother Saleha Siddiqi was a teacher at the Mahjube Herawy girls' school in Herat and continues to be committed to the formation of Afghan girls. In a private school disguised as a women's association, she currently teaches around 500 students of all ages.
The reading not only offers culinary inspiration, but also an insight into the reality of Afghan women - and shows how nutrition and culture are inseparable.
