Afghan cuisine and insights into a closed country
Little is known about Afghanistan in this country – even less about everyday life in a totalitarian state . Author Farsane Baraki recently visited the country and will speak about her experiences. A particular focus will be on Afghan food culture , which is often characterized by a purely plant-based diet – not out of conviction, but out of economic necessity. Many people cannot afford meat or animal products, so a diverse vegan cuisine based on rice, bread, vegetables, and legumes has developed.
In her book, Baraki shows how to conjure up a colorful and aromatic cuisine – accompanied by traditional soups, fruits, nuts, pistachios, and pine nuts. The dishes reflect not only the taste but also the cultural identity of Afghanistan.
About the author and her connection to Afghanistan
Farsane Baraki was born in Afghanistan and has lived in Germany for 30 years . She works at the Helmholtz Institute GSI in Wixhausen . Her mother, Saleha Siddiqi, was a teacher at the Mahjube Herawy girls' school in Herat and continues to be involved in the education of Afghan girls.
