Climate protection officer Kolmer: "These devices can save costs and CO₂."
Darmstadt. Split air conditioning units – commonly known as air conditioners – can do much more than just cool. Technically, they are heat pumps that can both heat and cool. "These units can save costs and avoid CO₂ emissions. Furthermore, air conditioners are easy to retrofit, making them attractive for energy-efficient renovations in existing buildings," explains Climate Protection Officer Michael Kolmer .
As the Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation explains, split air conditioning units extract heat from the room air during cooling mode and transfer it to the outside. In heating mode, the process is reversed: heat is extracted from the outside air and transferred to the interior – a highly efficient principle that also works at low temperatures.
High efficiency and savings potential
Modern heating systems achieve a seasonal performance factor (SPF) of over 4. This means that one kilowatt-hour of electricity generates over four kilowatt-hours of heating energy. Compared to oil, gas, or night storage heating systems, this can significantly reduce energy costs and CO₂ emissions .
particular advantages during the transitional seasons of spring and autumn : They can be used flexibly without having to fire up the entire heating system. Their rapid response time also makes them a useful addition to older heating systems, which are often inefficient at mild temperatures.
Contribution to the energy transition
“Using air conditioning units can save costs and avoid emissions. This contributes to the energy transition in the building sector and can increase interest in switching to heat pumps,” Kolmer continued. In combination with a photovoltaic system , a portion of the required electricity can also be generated cost-effectively on-site.
