HLNUG data show stable values – new EU regulations pose a challenge
Air quality in Darmstadt remained within the applicable limits in 2025. This is according to the latest measurement data published by the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology.
Limit values met again
According to the published annual averages, the currently valid limit values for air pollutants were met at all measuring stations in Darmstadt. This continues a trend that has been observed for several years.
At the same time, however, there is a slight increase in important pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. This trend can be observed not only in Darmstadt, but also throughout Hesse.
Weather influences measurements
The HLNUG cites prolonged periods of cool, stagnant weather at the beginning of 2025 as the main cause. These conditions led to a greater accumulation of pollutants and less removal of them.
New limit values from 2030 onwards pose challenges for cities
In addition to the current measurement data, the HLNUG also provided an outlook on the limit values that will apply from 2030 onwards. The situation will become particularly challenging for nitrogen dioxide: the future annual average value will be significantly lowered.
At measuring points such as Heinrichstrasse and Hügelstrasse, these stricter requirements are not yet being met.
Planned measures to improve air quality
The city of Darmstadt is working together with the state of Hesse and the relevant authorities on strategies to further improve air quality. The goal is to comply with the new limit values in the future.
Among other things, the expansion of public transport and the promotion of electromobility play an important role.
