Mayor Hanno Benz expresses his condolences after the deadly act of violence at a Graz school
Following the deadly school shooting in Graz that left several people dead, Darmstadt's mayor, Hanno Benz, expressed his condolences. Graz has been a twin city of Darmstadt, a city of science, since 1968.
"This act is shocking, a tragedy, and leaves unimaginable suffering in our twin city," Benz declared on Tuesday afternoon. "Our thoughts are with the people of Graz during these hours and days."
The shooting spree occurred on Tuesday morning. According to official reports, ten people were killed by gunfire , and others were injured. The incident took place at a school, and police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances.
Benz conveyed the personal condolences and the solidarity of the City of Science to Graz's mayor, Elke Kahr . "We also offered support and assistance – if there is anything we can do in these difficult times," Benz continued.
Town twinning with Graz since 1968
The Austrian city of Graz is the capital of the federal state of Styria and, with over 300,000 inhabitants, the second largest city in the country. The municipal partnership with Darmstadt has existed since 1968 and is maintained through regular exchanges at the cultural and civic levels.
