Application tips
How to successfully start a new job
Anyone applying for a new job – whether in Darmstadt, southern Hesse, or beyond – should keep a few basic rules in mind. A well-prepared application is the first impression and often the decisive step towards an interview. This page provides an overview of the most important tips.
Complete and informative application
A classic application consists of:
an individual cover letter ,
a tabular CV with a current photo,
as well as certificates and proof (e.g. training, work or further education certificates).
Important: No mass applications! Those who put in the effort and address the company directly have significantly better chances. The cover letter should clearly state your motivation – why this specific job, why this specific company?
When is a short application sufficient?
A short application consists only of a cover letter and resume – without certificates. It is often used for simple positions or at the express request of the company. It is also suitable for initial contact at job fairs or for speculative applications when no specific positions are advertised.
The unsolicited application – courageous and often successful
Many jobs are never publicly advertised. Those who applications , i.e., without a prior job posting, demonstrate initiative and can positively surprise potential employers. Crucially, this requires a strong connection to the company: What aligns with your qualifications, and where could your strengths be utilized?
CV: Tabular, clear and up-to-date
A tabular CV is standard practice today. It should be clearly structured – including contact information, education, work experience, and special skills (e.g., languages, IT, driver's license). The most recent position should always be listed first . If desired, a short self-description or "profile" can be added to the CV.
Online or in paper form
Online applications are the norm today – ideally as a PDF document via email or via application forms on career pages.
Paper applications are usually only required upon explicit request, e.g. in traditional craft businesses or in the public service.
Tip: Always pay attention to the requirements in the job advertisement. The form of your application should be based on these requirements.
