Delay at the daycare center construction site – Historical remains are being digitally documented
During excavation work on Marienplatz in Darmstadt, remains of the 19th-century dragoon barracks have been discovered. Construction workers at the site of the future daycare center, which is being built by the Darmstadt Science City Real Estate Management (IDA), unearthed wall remnants and a vault that was presumably used as a cesspool.
The finds date from the time of the dragoon barracks , which were built between 1825 and 1827. The building, along with the adjacent parade ground, was destroyed in the Darmstadt firebombing of September 11-12, 1944.
Archaeological documentation using 3D models
As is standard practice for urban construction projects, the necessary ordnance surveys were coordinated in advance with the Darmstadt Regional Council . Following requirements of the Lower Monument Protection Authority, 3D model will be created from this data .
Following the archaeological work, the foundations will be removed. Construction of the new daycare center will then continue.
Two-week construction delay – foundation stone laying in May
The archaeological work has delayed construction by approximately two weeks. The laying of the foundation stone for the new daycare center is still scheduled May 2025. Completion and commissioning of the facility is planned autumn 2026
