City police recognize man during Heinerfest – senior citizen still receiving medical treatment
Darmstadt. Following an altercation between a cyclist and a 70-year-old man on Tuesday (July 1) in Landgraf-Georg-Straße, police arrested a suspect on Friday evening (July 4). The arrest took place during the Heinerfest festival after a public appeal for information.
According to initial investigations, an argument broke out around noon between the elderly man and a cyclist whose identity is still unknown. Witnesses stated that the cyclist deliberately accelerated during the incident and struck the man with his bicycle. The 70-year-old fell and had to be resuscitated at the scene. He was taken to a hospital and is now out of danger.
In the Holzstraße area, a patrol of the city police stopped a 30-year-old man at approximately 8:20 p.m. whose physical characteristics matched the description in the wanted notice. The city police immediately informed the state police, who provisionally arrested the man from Darmstadt and took him to the station for further processing.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested man on suspicion of aggravated assault. Further investigations are being conducted by Precinct 10 of the Darmstadt Criminal Police.
Deputy Police Chief Dirk Fornoff thanked the officers involved: “A huge thank you goes to the city police patrol and our officers for their swift and dedicated action. I am pleased that after such a serious crime, which has deeply shaken many people in Darmstadt, we were able to identify and arrest a suspect so quickly. I wish the injured senior citizen a continued speedy and full recovery.”
The police point out that the photograph of the suspect published as part of the public search must be deleted immediately and must not be further distributed.
