Mayor Hanno Benz expresses doubts about the rule of law
The science city of Darmstadt is concerned about the arrest of Mustafa Bozbey, mayor of the Turkish partner city of Bursa.
According to the city administration, the circumstances of the arrest raise questions regarding the rule of law and democratic standards.
Criticism of potential political influence
The Darmstadt city council had already passed a resolution in connection with the imprisonment of Ekrem İmamoğlu. In it, the use of the justice system to eliminate political opponents was condemned.
The re-arrest of a democratically elected representative of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) is now viewed critically in this context.
Mayor Benz: Democracy must not be undermined
Mayor Hanno Benz stated that the arrest should not be an interference in democratic processes.
He emphasized that elected officials should not be prevented from carrying out their duties under politically questionable circumstances.
Solidarity with partner city Bursa
The science city of Darmstadt reaffirms its solidarity with Bursa and continues to advocate for the observance of democracy, the rule of law and local self-government.
Bursa, with around 3.2 million inhabitants, is the fourth largest city in Türkiye and has been a twin city of Darmstadt since 1971.
