Atelierhaus Darmstadt shows the book as an art object and the traces of reading
For the world's day of the book, the Atelierhaus Darmstadt is devoted to the book as an art object and the traces of reading in a special exhibition. From April 24 to May 4, 2025, works will be presented that show how books change through use, artistic interventions and creative interpretation.
Books are not only knowledge memory, but also personal companions and contemporary witnesses. They carry traces of their readers, are shaped by touch and develop. The Biennale Art & Book addresses this special connection between book, art and reading culture.
Artistic perspectives and interactive experiences
At the center of the exhibition are works by artists who reinterpret books as material and medium. Plastic processing, combinations with other materials and sculptural book objects offer unusual perspectives on book art. Films insight into sketchbooks enable visitors to understand creative creation processes. A playful approach is created with an experimental design in which books will be guarded - a tribute to their versatility.
In addition to the artistic work, there is a selection of rare antiquarian books that are offered for sale. A collection of classic art books also invites you to leaf through and discover.
The exhibition also offers a creative experience for children. You hear stories that are inspired by works of art, and then design your own pictures that can later be bound to a picture book.
