65. The architect and construction manager's death on February 21st
On the 65th anniversary of the death on February 21, science city of Darmstadt commemorates the former city building council, construction manager and architect August Buxbaum (1876–1960) with a wreath laying at his grave in the forest cemetery of Darmstadt .
Forming role for Darmstadt's cityscape
August Buxbaum was born on April 14, 1876 in Langen-Brombach and studied at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1904 he joined the city and headed the municipal building authority 1906 . As a city building council from 1909, he was responsible for numerous construction projects that still shape the cityscape today.
Significant buildings were created under his leadership, including:
- School buildings such as the Eleonoren and Justus Liebig School , the Kyritz and Pestalozzi School
- The Darmstadt Stadtbad (today Art Nouveau bath)
- The extension for the city hospital (Darmstadt Clinic)
- The building complex of the forest cemetery
Construction manager of the Olbrich building on the Mathildenhöhe
Buxbaum was also a site manager for the exhibition building on the Mathildenhöhe designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich . In the 1920s, he had the northern part of Rhön and Spessartring built with rent houses in the classic block of blocks. He also promoted infrastructure measures such as waste disposal .
After the Second World War, he was involved in the reconstruction of Darmstadt .
