Mayor Benz is accepting awards on Europe and emphasizing the importance of European city twinning
On the occasion of Europe, Mayor Hanno Benz received the European Prize "Estrella de Europa" (Stern Europe) for the science city of Darmstadt in the Spanish twin town of Logroño. The prize has been awarded by City Councilor Logroños to institutions every year on May 9, which are particularly committed to European cohesion.
The award ceremony took place on the Rathausplatz in Logroño. In addition to Darmstadt, the other European partner cities Brescia (Italy) , Dax and Libourne (both France) awarded.
"In the name of the science city of Darmstadt and all Darmstadt residents, I would like to thank the city of Logroño for this special award and the strong sign of European cohesion and our longstanding friendship," said Hanno Benz at the award ceremony. "On Europe day we remember the origins of the European Union. This award is not just a symbol, but an expression of our joint commitment to a peaceful and united Europe."
Benz emphasized that city twinning plays a leading role in European coexistence: "They are bridges between people and cultures and enable unity to live in diversity. Especially in the face of increasing anti -democratic tendencies, it is important to make and defend these values visible."

The Spanish city of Logroño is located in the La Rioja , has around 150,000 inhabitants and is an important stage on the Jakobsweg . The economy there is strongly shaped by viticulture , and Logroño is also the seat of the University of Universidad de la Rioja and a renowned research institute for oenology . The city twinning between Darmstadt and Logroño has existed since 1980 and is intensively maintained again after a corona -related interruption - both at a political and civil society level.
