Riedstadt honors commitment to democracy and the common good
As the town of Riedstadt, known for its connection to Büchner, announced, four long-serving local politicians were honored for their decades of volunteer work. At a reception in the Wolfskehlen community center, town council chairman Guido Funk and Mayor Marcus Kretschmann presented awards to Brigitte Hennig , Andreas Hirsch , Hermann Hammann , and Eva Roth . The event featured musical accompaniment by the Akkordia '73 Crumstadt ensemble , conducted by Marc Fischer.
Thank you for your perseverance and responsibility
Mayor Kretschmann praised the decades of service of those honored:
“We want to say thank you – for your perseverance, patience, passion and for everything you have done for and in Riedstadt.” The commitment of the four individuals is representative of a living democratic culture.
Awards for service over multiple terms
Eva Roth was active in the city council for the GLR from 2011 to 2021 and received the honorary certificate of the city of Büchner .
Hermann Hammann , who served as a city councilor for FFH/FRB between 2006 and 2021, was awarded the Bronze Medal of Honor . His wife, Angela Hammann, accepted the award on his behalf.
Brigitte Hennig , who was active in the municipal council for the SPD from 1997 to 2022 and later in the city council, and Andreas Hirsch , who was an SPD representative for decades and at times worked as First City Councillor in the city administration, received the honorary plaque in gold .
"Democracy thrives on participation."
Mayor Kretschmann highlighted the exemplary nature of those honored:
"Especially in times when the tone becomes harsher, we need people who look, listen and act. Democracy does not thrive on watching, but on participating."
Looking ahead: A call for a strong parliamentary culture
In closing, Brigitte Hennig expressed her wish for future parliamentary work in Riedstadt:
The parliament should remain "combative, critical, and courageous," and democratic forces must stand together as allies in defense of the free and democratic order. Only together can major challenges be overcome.
