Open learning and meeting place for German in everyday life
With the new Babbel Café, the city of Weiterstadt an open learning and conversation group for people with a migration background, focusing on speaking and understanding German. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants can chat and gain more confidence in their German language skills. The program is organized and run by Andrea Dippel and Volker Budde.
Low-threshold meeting instead of a classic language course
The Babbel Café is designed as an easily accessible meeting place. The focus is on appreciation, exchange, and speaking together. It is explicitly not a traditional language course or a systematic development of German skills. Rather, it's about getting into "babbling" without pressure to perform, sharing experiences, and expressing oneself in German without fear.
This program is aimed at people who can speak and read German but rarely have the opportunity to actively use the language in everyday life. Those who have already attended a language course can also further improve their spoken German skills here.
Continuation of a proven service
The Babbel Café evolved from the former "vhs Lerntreff Weiterstadt" (Weiterstadt Adult Education Center Learning Center), whose funding ended in October 2025. The city of Weiterstadt has continued the program since November 2025 as part of the "Municipal Integration Guides for Strengthening Integration Success" (KISI) project. This program, initiated by the Hessian state government, is funded by the European Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and supports municipalities in developing sustainable integration structures.
Topics from the everyday lives of the participants
The content is tailored to the group's interests. Topics covered include life in Germany, school and work, family, democracy, and cultural diversity. Thematically focused vocabulary training, basic grammar, and sentence structure are also incorporated into the meetings. The personal interaction – often over a cup of coffee – makes the Babbel Café an important contribution to integration, participation, and confidence in everyday language use.
