Lecture series now available online
Recordings of a lecture series on adapting buildings to climate change, which were conducted as part of the course program of the Darmstadt Adult Education Center by the Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation in cooperation with BUND and the Hessian Consumer Center, can now be found at www.darmstadt.de under “Climate Protection”.
In the fall and winter of 2024, Darmstadt residents were able to participate in after-work educational courses on topics such as building technology, renovation, photovoltaics, climate adaptation, and more. Attendance at the lectures was possible both in person at the Center for Urban Nature in the Orangerie in Bessungen and online.
“Providing practical knowledge and advice to citizens is very important to us. Showcasing good, implementable solutions and opportunities to make one's own home ‘future-proof’ while simultaneously contributing to the fight against climate change met with great interest from the audience; the various recordings are well worth watching,” said Climate Protection Officer Michael Kolmer. During the six themed evenings, the experts from the city's Office for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation debunked myths surrounding homeownership, such as “walls need to breathe” or “heat pumps only work in new buildings,” and provided clear examples and explanations of the Building Energy Act and many other current issues.
Using the example of a private residential building in the Heimstättensiedlung housing estate, the presentation demonstrated which steps are possible and advisable during building renovation and how a conversion to an efficient heat pump can be achieved. Information on costs and potential savings was also presented transparently. In a subsequent presentation, Rudolf Bersch, energy consultant at the Hessian Consumer Center, addressed all questions concerning photovoltaic systems, such as how electricity from one's own roof is suitable for powering an electric car and supplying heating and hot water.
