The city of Darmstadt is creating a safe crossing on Wittmannstrasse / Wandrey: “An important step towards accessibility and peace in mobility”
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research an accessible pedestrian crossing between the two sections of Paulusplatz on Wittmannstraße , east of Niebergallweg . This addresses a request from local residents and improves traffic safety in the southern part of Paulusplatz.
“Due to the newly designed green space, there is an increased need for crossings at this location,” explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey . “With the new crossing, we are significantly improving traffic safety and accessibility in the southern part of Paulusplatz.”
Barrier-free solution despite listed building status
The original plan was to lower the curbs and tactile paving for blind and visually impaired people. However, because the sidewalks are listed as historical monuments , this measure could not be implemented at short notice.
As a pragmatic interim solution , two storm drains installed and small-scale frames were built into the roadway . This construction is intended to bridge the gap until a possible complete redesign of the area .
The project was implemented in cooperation between the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office and the Municipal Enterprise for Tasks and Services (EAD) .
Contribution to safe and respectful mobility
“I am pleased that we have been able to improve safety and accessibility for all road users with this quick and practical solution,” said Wandrey. “Measures like these strengthen mobility harmony in our city – they promote respectful and safe coexistence among people traveling on foot, by bicycle, or by car.”
The city intends to monitor the situation in the coming months and examine whether the measure proves successful in other parts of the city – for example, in the Postsiedlung , where barrier-free curb cuts have not been possible until now.
