The southern recreation area will be enhanced with a new sports field
Construction of a new basketball and soccer cage . Following the city council's decision to award the contract to Reuter GaLaBau GmbH from Langgöns, site preparation is expected to begin at the end of September 2025.
The skate park will be closed for several weeks during the construction phase. Preparatory work will begin, including the dismantling of individual elements and the demolition of the northeast ramp. The components will be delivered in early October, followed by assembly in mid-October. The flooring is scheduled to be installed by the end of October or the beginning of November – delays due to weather conditions are possible. Completion is planned for November 2025.
The project is financed through funds from the Regional Equalization of Burdens of Frankfurt/Main Airport and the Federal Action Programme “Catching Up After Corona for Children and Young People” .
New exercise area for young people
“We are creating a modern recreational area for young people here – and are consciously investing in the quality of public space. We ask all users of the recreational area for some patience during the construction phase,” says Christian Grunwald, Head of Youth Development and Project Coordinator.
The multifunctional playing field, measuring 20 by 13 meters, will be built on the eastern edge of the skate park. It will feature a resilient, water-permeable synthetic surface and a stainless steel fence with noise reduction capabilities. In addition to basketball hoops and soccer goals, ground sockets for a volleyball net are also planned. Barrier-free access will be extended to the new cage and complemented by new seating and landscaping.
Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl emphasizes: “The new Cage is a strong symbol for youth, movement and encounters in public spaces. We are investing in contemporary offerings – together with and for young people.”
Overall concept for the southern recreation area
The Cage is part of a larger development plan. Back in 2021, the old soccer field was dismantled to make room for new sports facilities. Requests from youth participation, especially for a basketball court, were incorporated into the planning. Following the construction of the dirt park, the renovation of the graffiti walls, and the installation of the "AnsprechBar" (a drop-in center) for the mobile youth work program, the recreational area is now being further modernized.
A second construction phase will involve the renovation of the existing skate park, but its implementation depends on future funding.
The mobile youth work team will be regularly on site , "AnsprechBar" griesheim-gestalten.de .
