Citizen participation shapes the selection of street furniture / Installation completed by the end of November
Darmstadt. The benches on Ernst-Ludwig-Straße and Ludwigstraße are currently being replaced and renovated. Since the beginning of the week, city employees have been removing the existing 44 circular benches around the trees. Following this, tree trunk protectors will be installed in cooperation with the Parks and Green Spaces Department, before the new benches are put in place. The work is scheduled by the end of November .
The selection of the new bench type was based on public participation : Four test benches from different manufacturers were set up in the pop-up summer garden on Ernst-Ludwigs-Platz, and Darmstadt residents could vote on them. More than 300 people participated in the survey – with a clear result: The majority voted for test bench number 4 .
“We are delighted by the interest and feedback on our pilot project. This demonstrates once again how important good street furniture is to the people of Darmstadt,” explains Planning Director Michael Kolmer . “In addition to the public vote, the expert assessment of the participating departments was, of course, also factored into the final selection.”
Wetz Außenraum-Elemente GmbH is now being used , which impresses with its lifting aids and a fully usable seating surface . The new benches are intended not only to improve the quality of the space but also to be accessible and durable.
Last year, as part of the federal program "Sustainable City Centers and Centres", the dilapidated benches in Wilhelminenstrasse replaced – a further step towards the improvement of public space in Darmstadt.
