First professional contract for 19-year-old goalkeeper from Wolfsburg's youth academy
SV Darmstadt 98 has strengthened its goalkeeping department: Benedikt Börner is transferring from VfL Wolfsburg to the Lilies and has signed his first professional contract . The 19-year-old goalkeeper comes from Munich and is expected to complement the existing goalkeeping team.
Sporting director Paul Fernie sees Börner as a promising new signing:
“We are delighted to welcome Benedikt, a highly talented and ambitious goalkeeper, to our team. He has been active at the highest level in youth football over the past few years and is now ready to take the step into senior football. We will give him the necessary time for his development and are convinced that he will enrich our goalkeeping team with his abilities.”
Börner himself is looking forward to the new challenge:
"It's a great feeling to have signed my first professional contract with Darmstadt 98 of all clubs. During the discussions, I felt that the Lilies are the right club for me to develop in the best possible way. I can hardly wait to start pre-season training with my teammates and the coaching staff."
From Ingolstadt via Wolfsburg to Böllenfalltor
Börner initially came through the youth ranks at FC Ingolstadt before joining the youth academy of VfL Wolfsburg In the 2023/24 season, he made twelve appearances for Wolfsburg's U19 team in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga (U19 Bundesliga). He also played three matches in the DFB-Pokal (German Youth Cup) and was in in their 1-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the U19 round of 16 .
With this signing, the Lilies are once again relying on young talents with development potential – a strategy that has already borne fruit several times recently.
