Manager returns to Darmstadt location on May 1, 2026
The science and technology company Merck has announced that Benjamin Hein (38) will be appointed to the Executive Board effective May 1, 2026. Hein will head the Electronics business sector, succeeding Kai Beckmann , who will assume the role of Chairman of the Executive Board of Merck at that time. With this new position, Benjamin Hein returns to Merck's headquarters in Darmstadt after several international assignments.
Johannes Baillou, Chairman of the Executive Board and the Family Council of E. Merck KG, praised the decision: Benjamin Hein had demonstrated strategic foresight during his 13 years at Merck and, with his enthusiasm for innovation, had made a significant contribution to the company's growth. He is extremely familiar with the electronics industry, its customers, and its technologies, and his international management experience in Asia, Europe, and the USA makes him ideally suited for his new role.
To ensure a smooth transition, Hein will assume leadership of the Business Growth and Customer Value division within the Electronics business unit and join the management team on March 1, 2026. Previously, he was head of the Life Science Services business unit, responsible for global contract development, manufacturing, and testing services within the Life Science business unit, based in Burlington, USA.
Benjamin Hein has been with Merck since 2011, with a brief interruption. He has held various management positions in the Life Science and Electronics business units, as well as in corporate functions. Among other roles, as Head of Corporate Strategy and CEO Office, he significantly shaped the company's strategic direction. As Head of Strategy and Business Transformation in Electronics, he played a key role in integrating the acquisitions of Versum Materials and Intermolecular, as well as in the "Bright Future" transformation program, which focused the division more strongly on the semiconductor industry.
In subsequent roles, Hein led the Delivery Systems and Services business in Greater China and Southeast Asia, based in Taiwan, achieving high double-digit growth rates. Most recently, he headed the Specialty Gases business unit, further developing his operational and commercial expertise.
Hein holds a Master of Business (Marketing) from Queensland University of Technology in Australia and a Master of Science in Strategic Marketing from Maastricht University. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the German-American Business Council of Boston.
As of May 1, 2026, the Merck Executive Board will be composed as follows:
