New building with a passive house standard and barrier -free equipment officially opened / OB Benz: "A promise of the future for modern education"
solemnly inaugurated Bertolt Brecht School on Wednesday, May 28th Mayor Hanno Benz, city treasurer André Schellenberg and school head Holger Klötzner underlined the importance of the new building for the city's educational infrastructure together with headmaster Sebastian Franke.
A milestone for modern school architecture
The three -storey new building replaces the previously torn main building in the same place and is connected by a connecting corridor with the existing specialist class wing from 2011. The passive house construction with comprehensive accessibility was certified by the Passive House Institute.
"Today a new chapter begins in the over 50-year history of the Bertolt Brecht School. With the new building, we are making a sign of the future-for a school that meets modern demands and at the same time reaffirmed its role as a place for equal opportunities and education for everyone," said Hanno Benz.
Special architecture with educational added value
A special feature of the new building is the stage playable on both sides in the auditorium. This can be used for both events and in class. The facade combines large window surfaces with wooden panels and offers additional sun protection and safety . The new main entrance can be reached via the redesigned school yard.
"The construction period was challenging, but with today's inauguration we show how modern school architecture and climate protection can be combined," said city treasurer André Schellenberg. "The monitoring of energy consumption will provide us with important knowledge."
Barrier -free and compatible with monuments
The new building fulfills high standards in accessibility : two elevators open up all floors, doors are wide enough, there are several handicapped -friendly sanitary rooms including shower. A mobile ramp enables access to the lowered auditorium.
Already in the planning phase, the neighborhood was taken into account as a listed Bernhard-Oldelung school . The suggestions of the monument protection authority flowed into the architectural design.
Background for school and construction planning
The Bertolt Brecht School is the only high school high school in Darmstadt and is located on the edge of the North Citizens' Park. The original building from the 1970s consisted of a main building, an outbuilding and a sports hall. The new planning was implemented by the architecture firm AGN, Stuttgart , in coordination with the municipal school office.
