Mobility Director Wandrey emphasizes consideration as the key to mobility peace
The science city of Darmstadt announces increased bicycle enforcement in the city center on September 24. The goal is to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists and promote respectful interaction. The campaign is being overseen by Paul Georg Wandrey, head of the city's mobility department.
Cycling is generally prohibited on several streets and paths within pedestrian zones—such as Ludwigstrasse and Ernst-Ludwig-Strasse. Nevertheless, the ban is regularly violated. To promote better coexistence, the city relies on awareness campaigns and personal addresses, as well as recurring checks by the city police.
Walking speed and consideration required
"Cycling is permitted in many parts of the city center, but it also leads to conflicts with pedestrians there," says Wandrey. Dangerous situations regularly occur, especially on Wilhelminenstraße and at Luisenplatz. "The most important rule is to ride at walking pace, be absolutely considerate of pedestrians, and be ready to brake at all times. If cyclists and pedestrians are equally considerate, we can ensure peaceful mobility."
The announced controls on September 24 are intended not only to punish violations of the rules, but above all to raise public awareness for greater mutual consideration.
