Mobility officer Wandrey emphasizes consideration as the key to mobility peace
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, has announced increased bicycle enforcement in the city center on September 24th. The aim is to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists and to promote considerate coexistence. The initiative will be overseen by Paul Georg Wandrey, the city's head of mobility.
Cycling is generally prohibited on several streets and paths within the pedestrian zone – for example, Ludwigstrasse and Ernst-Ludwig-Strasse. Nevertheless, this prohibition is regularly ignored. To promote better coexistence, the city is relying on public awareness campaigns, personal appeals, and regular patrols by the city police.
Walking pace and consideration are required
“Cycling is permitted in many parts of the city center, but it also leads to conflicts with pedestrians,” said Wandrey. Dangerous situations occur regularly, especially on Wilhelminenstraße and at Luisenplatz. “The most important rule is to ride at walking speed, to show absolute consideration for pedestrians, and to be constantly prepared to brake. If cyclists and pedestrians show equal consideration, we can ensure peaceful mobility.”
The announced checks on September 24th are not only intended to punish violations of the rules, but above all to raise public awareness for greater mutual consideration.
