Police advise better security of two-wheelers after the summer holidays
With the end of the summer holidays, traffic around schools, train stations, and bus stops is increasing significantly. Many students and commuters are once again increasingly using bicycles and e-scooters. The South Hesse Police Headquarters warns of an increase in thefts and offers tips for effective protection.
High-quality bikes, accessories, and easily removable parts are particularly attractive to thieves. Quick-release skewers should therefore be replaced with Allen, Torx, or hexagon screws. Special screws or coded lock nuts that can only be opened with special tools offer additional protection. Concealed screw systems that are only accessible when the bike is turned upside down also make it difficult for thieves to steal.
Sturdy locks and secure parking spaces.
We recommend using sturdy U-locks or folding locks with recognized security standards. As a rule of thumb, five to ten percent of the bike's value should be spent on the lock. The frame and wheel should always be secured to fixed objects. Clearly visible, lit parking spaces increase security. Valuables such as helmets, bags, or on-board computers should not be left on the bike.
Securing e-scooters properly
The same basic rules apply to e-scooters: Use high-quality locks and always lock them to fixed objects such as lampposts or anchored stands. Many models offer suitable locking points on the footboard or folding mechanism. GPS trackers or immobilizers offer additional security. Scooters are best stored in courtyards, basements, or garages. Integrated security options should be considered right from the purchase date. The serial number, model, color, and purchase date should be documented, and the receipt should be retained.
Coding as Effective Protection
Coding not only deters potential thieves but also makes it easier to return stolen vehicles to their owners. The South Hesse Police regularly offers free coding campaigns for bicycles and e-scooters.
