Police advise better securing of two-wheelers after the summer holidays
With the end of the summer holidays, traffic around schools, train stations, and bus stops increases significantly. Many students and commuters are once again using bicycles and e-scooters. The South Hesse Police Headquarters warns of an increase in thefts and offers tips for effective protection.
High-quality bicycles, accessories, and easily removable parts are particularly attractive to thieves. Quick-release skewers should therefore be replaced with Allen, Torx, or hex screws. Special screws or coded locknuts that can only be opened with special tools offer additional protection. Concealed screw systems that are only accessible when the bicycle is upside down also make it more difficult for thieves.
Sturdy locks and secure parking locations:
The use of robust U-locks or folding locks with recognized security standards is recommended. As a rule of thumb, spend five to ten percent of the bicycle's value on the lock. The frame and wheels should always be locked to fixed objects. Well-lit, easily visible parking areas increase security. Valuable items such as helmets, bags, or bike computers should not be left on the bicycle.
Securing your e-scooter properly
: The same basic rules apply to e-scooters: Use high-quality locks and always secure them to fixed objects such as lampposts or anchored stands. Many models offer suitable locking points on the footboard or folding mechanism. GPS trackers or immobilizers offer additional security. It's best to park scooters in courtyards, basements, or garages. Consider integrated security features when purchasing an e-scooter. Document the serial number, model, color, and purchase date, and keep the receipt.
Coding as an effective protection measure
: Coding not only deters potential thieves but also makes it easier to return stolen vehicles to their owners. The South Hesse Police regularly offer free coding events for bicycles and e-scooters.
