District Administrator Will and Mayor Merkel examine danger areas and potential improvements
GROSS-GERAU DISTRICT – As part of a cycling survey , District Administrator Thomas Will and Mayor Markus Merkel inspected the cycle paths in Büttelborn and the Klein-Gerau district. Together with the district's cycling representative Franziska Knaack and local mobility coordinator Eva Schecker , bottlenecks were identified, danger spots were assessed, and measures for increased safety and improved connectivity were discussed.
"Cycling is a building block of sustainable mobility and contributes significantly to the local quality of life," emphasized District Administrator Will. The goal is to make commuting, shopping, school trips, and leisure trips more comfortable and safer. Mayor Merkel added: "Good cycling infrastructure strengthens Büttelborn as an attractive residential and business location. We are taking suggestions from practice and working on concrete implementation steps."
First improvements possible in the short term
Some measures could be implemented quickly. For example, the possibility of opening the one-way street on Thüringer Weg between Büttelborn and Klein-Gerau to cyclists traveling in the opposite direction is being considered. The barriers at the train station underpass in Klein-Gerau, which were deemed "unsuitable and incorrectly installed," are also to be adjusted so that they no longer pose a hazard.
Bottlenecks requiring greater action
The situation is more difficult at the bridge over the A67 at the edge of Büttelborn. There is no bike lane there, and heavy goods traffic is causing risky overtaking maneuvers. The Autobahn GmbH is responsible. An on-site meeting with the district administrator, mayor, Hessen Mobil, and the Autobahn GmbH is intended to highlight the urgency.
