Ice sculptors, fire shows and extended opening hours on November 27th
Under the motto "Fire & Ice," City Marketing Darmstadt invites you to Black Night Shopping in the city center on Friday, November 27, 2026. Shops will remain open until 9 p.m. that evening, and the Darmstadt Christmas Market will stay open until 10 p.m. The shopping event will be accompanied by a diverse program featuring ice sculptors, fire shows, imaginative walk-around acts, light installations, and live music.
From late afternoon onwards, visitors can expect a mix of pre-Christmas shopping and entertainment. Various streets and squares in the city center will become stages for artistic performances that explore the interplay of fire and ice.
Ice sculptors are displaying their art on Wilhelminenstrasse
Visitors can observe how delicate figures and imaginative creatures are created from massive blocks of ice in Wilhelminenstrasse.
Several ice sculptors will demonstrate their skills there between 4 pm and 9 pm. Right before the eyes of the audience, they will work on large blocks of ice, transforming them step by step into artistic sculptures.
Fire shows on Ludwigsplatz
In contrast to the icy art, the fire shows on Ludwigsplatz offer a unique experience. From 7 pm onwards, fire artists will present their performances featuring dance, movement, and fire.
The performances take place hourly until 9 pm. This gives visitors multiple opportunities to experience the productions.
Luminous figures and special photo opportunities
Even away from the designated event venues, there's plenty to discover. Imaginative walk-around acts in vibrant costumes stroll through the pedestrian zone, embracing the wintry aspect of the event's theme.
Special light installations are available at various locations in the city center for souvenir photos. These include illuminated angel wings, light sculptures, and the DA Instagram Point.
The moving light figures complement the offerings and create surprising encounters in the streets during the shopping evening.
Mobile drum band provides the rhythm
The mobile percussion band drumlet is responsible for the musical accompaniment. The musicians move through the city center without a fixed stage or elaborate technical equipment.
With their rhythmic performances, they accompany the Black Night shopping and provide musical entertainment at various locations.
Combining shopping and Christmas market
With this event, the city marketing department aims to combine the pre-Christmas shopping spree with a special city center experience.
“With ‘Fire & Ice’ we want to combine the pre-Christmas shopping spree with a real city center experience,” explains Moritz Koch, Chairman of Darmstadt Citymarketing e. V.
The combination of retail, gastronomy, Christmas market and artistic performances is intended to create additional incentives for visiting the city center.
Those who want to spend some time after shopping can round off the evening at the Darmstadt Christmas market. The stalls in the various squares remain open until 10 p.m. and offer, among other things, mulled wine, roasted almonds, and sweet and savory specialties.
Affordable parking options in the evening
For visitors arriving by car, a night fee of five euros applies in the Luisencenter and Carree underground car parks between 7 pm and 6 am.
Alternatively, Darmstadt city center can be reached by public transport. According to the city marketing department, up to 2,000 bus and train connections lead to the city center daily.
