The city is prohibiting parking on green spaces in Rüdesheimer Straße
Large boulders will soon be placed on Rüdesheimer Straße in Darmstadt to prevent vehicles from parking on the grass verges between the trees. The City of Darmstadt will have the stones placed in the affected areas during the 43rd calendar week, between October 19th and 25th, 2026. This measure aims to permanently put an end to the parking on the green spaces that has been a common practice for years.
According to the city, residents were informed about the measure before the work began.
Green spaces and tree roots should be protected
The areas between the trees lining Rüdesheimer Straße are not designated parking spaces. Nevertheless, they have been used for parking vehicles for years.
This has put a considerable strain on the green verges. The soil and the root systems of the trees there are particularly affected. Regular driving and parking can cause long-term damage to these green spaces.
The city intends to use the boulders to prevent vehicles from continuing to drive onto the green verges. This measure is meant to protect the areas and ensure their long-term preservation.
The safety of cyclists also plays a role
In addition to protecting green spaces, the city cites traffic safety as another reason for the measure.
Vehicles parked directly next to the cycle path can be particularly dangerous for cyclists. If drivers open their doors without paying attention to passing cyclists, there is a risk of so-called dooring accidents.
Prohibiting parking on the grass verges should also reduce this risk.
The city is aware of the tense parking situation
Back in 2023, the science city of Darmstadt had already announced its intention to permanently prohibit parking on the green strips in Rüdesheimer Straße.
The administration acknowledges that the parking situation has changed over the decades. In particular, the requirements for parking facilities have changed since the construction of the terraced houses.
Some of the garages built back then are too small for today's vehicles. This has increased parking pressure on the street.
However, the city emphasizes that the tight parking situation does not justify the use of public green spaces as additional parking spaces.
Parking on the roadway remains possible
The measure does not change every parking option for drivers on Rüdesheimer Straße.
The existing temporary parking spaces on the roadway can continue to be used in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Even short stops for boarding and alighting, as well as for loading and unloading, remain permitted under the road traffic regulations.
By placing the boulders, the city aims to specifically prevent parking on green spaces without eliminating regular parking and stopping options on the roadway.
