Wild animals need peace and quiet – leash laws for dogs, rules to stay on designated paths and cutting bans in the garden
The city of Griesheim points out that the breeding and nesting season for wild animals is in effect from March 1st to July 15th inclusive. During this particularly sensitive period, special protective regulations apply in open fields and green spaces – to protect birds, deer, hares, and other wild animals.
Do not touch young wild animals – leash laws apply everywhere
Many wild animals give birth to or raise their young during this time. Deer and hares often leave their young at the edge of fields or in meadows, while birds – including endangered ground-nesting species such as skylarks, partridges, and harriers – build their nests directly on the ground. Any disturbance can be fatal for the offspring.
The city of Griesheim therefore asks all citizens:
- Dogs must always be kept on a leash – regardless of size, breed, or behavior.
- Do not leave official paths , not even on foot or by bicycle.
- Do not touch young animals , even if they appear helpless – their parents are usually nearby.
Violations are administrative offenses
Violations of these regulations are not a trivial matter. They constitute an administrative offense and can be punished with a fine. The protection of animals during their breeding season takes precedence – simply leaving the designated paths can cause significant disturbance.
Gardens also affected: observe cutting bans
The breeding season also affects your own property. From March 1st to September 30th, the radical cutting or clearing of hedges, shrubs, and trees is generally prohibited under the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Maintenance and shaping cuts, however, are permitted if they are carried out carefully and do not endanger animal nests.
Environmental protection notice
Furthermore, the city of Griesheim appeals to all dog owners to be considerate in the fields and meadows: Food also grows there – dog excrement and garbage endanger humans, animals and the environment alike.
