Distribution at the town hall reception is possible after staff training
Good news for everyone wanting to protect themselves against the looming mosquito plague: Starting Tuesday, June 10, 2025, residents of Büchnerstadt can once again pick up free Bti tablets at the town hall reception . Distribution had been temporarily suspended due to a change in legislation that introduced new regulations for dispensing the medication.
Background: New regulations through EU law
The Municipal Working Group for Mosquito Control (KABS) has announced new regulations regarding the distribution of Bti tablets . This stems from an EU regulation classifying biocidal products of product type 18 (insecticides) self-service – meaning that distribution to the public is now restricted to individuals with the appropriate certification .
Although several city employees possessed the necessary qualifications, further training was required before distribution could resume. Other member municipalities of the KABS (Association of Municipalities in the Public Sector) were also affected by the new regulation. The KABS therefore organized training sessions at short notice, enabling distribution to resume on June 10th.
Effects and uses
Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) is a biologically active agent used to control the larvae of certain mosquito species, particularly mosquitoes (Culicidae) and black flies (Simuliidae) . The protein crystals produced by the bacterium are toxic to the larvae even in small doses, but are harmless to humans, pets, and other animals .
Further information on the use of Bti and mosquito control in the region can be found on the KABS eV .
