Darmstadt relies entirely on digital applications in the construction sector
From Wednesday, October 1, 2025 , the building permit process in the City of Science Darmstadt will be handled entirely digitally. "With this, the City of Science Darmstadt is responding to the wishes of developers and architects for a modern, fast and transparent building permit process," explains City Councillor Paul Georg Wandrey .
Since the introduction of digital applications, around 50 percent of applicants have been using the Hesse building portal , through which architects and developers can register and select Darmstadt as the responsible authority. The portal enables a seamless and paperless process – from application submission and approval to the completion of the construction project.
The advantages of digitization are manifold: lower printing and shipping costs, less archiving effort, shorter coordination processes, fewer follow-up requests and faster approval times.
Important: As of September 30, 2025, the city of Darmstadt will no longer accept building applications in paper form.
