Police offer practical tips on burglary prevention during the holiday season
With the start of the summer holidays, not only does the anticipation of relaxation increase, but so does the risk of burglaries. While many people go on vacation, burglars take advantage of empty houses and apartments. Therefore, as part of its summer campaign, the South Hesse police are launching an information campaign under the motto: "Burglars don't take holidays – Go on holiday safely" .
The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of burglary prevention measures and to sensitize the public to the topic of prevention. In addition to information booths and advisory services in the region, the police are also providing specific tips on how to behave.
Prevention made easy: These measures help
Often, simple precautions can prevent a burglary:
- Always lock your front door – even if you're only going to be gone for a short time.
- Close windows and balcony doors completely – tilted windows are considered open.
- Don't hide keys outside – burglars know every hiding place.
- Replace the lock cylinder if the key is lost.
- Be mindful of strangers in residential complexes or neighborhoods.
- Report any suspicious observations to the police immediately.
- No indication of absence – neither on the internet nor on the answering machine.
The police also recommend installing mechanical locks on windows and doors. Further security is offered by burglar and hold-up alarm systems , which sound an alarm in the event of an attempted break-in or can be manually activated in an emergency.
On-site consultation and information
