South Hesse police offer tips on how to protect yourself against burglary and fraud
Recognizing criminal tricks: Police warn against thieves' markings and absence markers
Even as the days grow longer, the darker months remain a busy time for burglars. It is therefore all the more important to be vigilant and recognize suspicious signs early. The South Hesse Police Headquarters is once again raising awareness about burglary prevention and offering tips on how citizens can protect themselves from criminal activity.
Recognize warning signs and act accordingly
Criminals use various methods to determine if houses are occupied. They ring doorbells or knock on windows to test the residents' response. If there is no reaction, the house could be considered a potential burglary target.
Another indicator is so-called thieves' cant – inconspicuous chalk marks on walls, doors, or mailboxes. These markings serve criminals to communicate information about the residents, for example, about absences or valuables in the house.
Equally insidious are absence markers . Perpetrators deliberately place objects, such as stones in front of the door or small items in the garden. If these remain undisturbed for an extended period, it signals to the perpetrators that the house is empty. Therefore, it is important to be aware of such changes in the surroundings.
Simple measures for protection
- Look out for suspicious markings on your house or in the neighborhood.
- Remove any conspicuous items that could serve as markers of absence.
- Illuminate house entrances and driveways to deter potential perpetrators.
- Keep in close contact with your neighbors and share any suspicious observations.
- Report suspicious persons or signs to the police immediately by calling 110 .
The police advise: Vigilance can be crucial! Those who remain attentive and do not ignore suspicious signs can actively contribute to preventing burglaries.
