Kunsthalle allows longer access to the GDR exhibition / Above-average visitor numbers
Due to popular demand, the exhibition "Burned In" at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt has been extended by one week. Visitors now have until Sunday, July 6, 2025, to experience this impressive show before the summer holidays begin. The exhibition is dedicated to the work of artists from the GDR who pursued independent paths beyond socialist realism.
Director Dr. León Krempel is delighted with the response: "The number of visitors is significantly higher than the average of past exhibitions." The extended period offers working professionals and art enthusiasts with busy schedules the chance for a late visit.
A multifaceted exhibition featuring painting, poetry, music and sculpture
The exhibition features 20 paintings, complemented by 40 lyrical pieces and ten listening stations with music that can be experienced individually via headphones. The combination of visual art, literature, and sound creates an atmospheric overall experience that makes the complexity of artistic life in the GDR tangible.
The title "Burned In" comes from a poem by the writer Kurt Drawert and refers to his formative youth in East Germany. The exhibition was realized in cooperation with the Center for New Literature Darmstadt and the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD).
Opening hours and admission
The exhibition is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Thursdays (except July 3rd) until 9 p.m.
Admission is €10, or €7 for concessions.
Outlook: New music follows GDR art
Seamlessly following the end of "Eingebrannt," the next major collaboration begins: From July 19 to August 2, the Kunsthalle Darmstadt, together with the IMD Darmstadt, presents the exhibition "Situations. Listening to Spaces" as part of the International Summer Courses for New Music . These internationally renowned courses have shaped Darmstadt's musical profile since 1946 – and this year, they once again build bridges between contemporary art and experimental music.
