What does Catcalling mean?
The term "catcalling" comes from English and literally means "cat calls". What is meant are sexually assaulted or harassing comments and gestures - without physical contact. Typical examples are:
- suggestive calls or whistles
- Unwanted kissing noises
- sexually charged sayings on the street
- Extensive news on social networks
Even though Catcalling has not yet been legally a criminal offense, this form of verbal harassment has real effects: women and girls avoid ways or places where they feel uncomfortable or threatened - a clear cut in their freedom and participation in public space.
A social problem
Catcalling does not only affect individuals or certain regions. It is a widespread social problem that can occur in all social and geographical contexts - also directly in the neighborhood. The day of action made it clear: sexual harassment in everyday life must no longer be ignored or downplayed.
