Party presents housing policy paper with guidelines for urban development
The CDU in Darmstadt has presented a new housing policy paper. In it, the party sets out guidelines for a forward-looking housing policy that, according to its own description, aims to create more living space while simultaneously managing the city's growth.
Focus on development plans
According to the CDU, zoning plans are the key instrument for accelerating housing construction. "Less regulation means more housing construction," explained Roland Desch , the party's housing policy spokesperson. The goal is to develop plans proactively and efficiently, rather than simply reacting to specific construction projects. This creates speed, reliability, and reduces the administrative burden.
Ctirad Kotoucek also emphasized the importance of a broad range of housing options: "People need housing – in all price ranges." The CDU advocates for a balanced mix of housing types, from subsidized apartments to options for the middle class and single-family homes, provided the local situation allows it.
Housing for all population groups
The CDU parliamentary group leaders, Caroline Groß and Dr. Annette Brunert, emphasized that housing policy must be designed for all segments of the population. Families need sufficiently large apartments, students and young people need affordable options, while skilled workers and managers should also be able to find housing in Darmstadt. Only by expanding the supply can affordable rents be secured in the long term.
CDU sees growth as an opportunity
“Darmstadt is growing – and that’s an opportunity. But growth means responsibility,” said Groß. “We must set the course today so that there will be enough housing, daycare centers, schools and infrastructure tomorrow as well.”
With this list of demands, the CDU aims to provide answers to the current housing shortage while simultaneously securing the city's long-term development. "Growth will happen one way or another – we have to manage it. Anything else would be irresponsible," Groß and Brunert concluded.
