The project “The Cemetery Lives” invites interreligious exploration and nature observation
Darmstadt. The Institute for Theological Zoology (ITZ) to a special event at the Darmstadt Forest Cemetery on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. Under the title "The Cemetery Comes Alive – Interreligious Ark Gardens in Germany," an ecological excursion and a moth light show will take place. The aim is to make the connection between nature, religion, and urban space tangible and to demonstrate the importance of cemeteries as places of biodiversity.
Excursion and moth lights
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with an ecological and interreligious exploration under the motto "The Cemetery is Alive" . The meeting point is the forecourt at the main entrance of the forest cemetery.
Starting at 6:30 p.m. , the "Moth Light Show" in the Muslim cemetery . Using a professional entomological light source, the colorful diversity of native moths be revealed. Participation is free, but registration is requested.
Cooperation and scientific background
The project is being carried out jointly with the Abrahamic Forum and the city of Darmstadt . It is part of the nationwide ITZ project "The Cemetery Lives – Interreligious Ark Gardens in Germany ," which is funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Environment and Development .
The project receives support from, among others, the University of Münster (Institute for Landscape Ecology, Center for Islamic Theology) and the University of Potsdam (School of Jewish Theology).

- 💡 Please bring: sturdy footwear, a flashlight, seating if needed, and food.
- 🔔 The moth bioluminescence only occurs in dry conditions and (almost) no wind .
- Cemeteries, with their tranquility and darkness, are considered valuable habitats for urban nature and extracurricular learning spaces . The event invites participants to discover ecological and cultural diversity together.
