Project “The Cemetery Lives” invites interreligious exploration and nature observation
Darmstadt. The Institute for Theological Zoology (ITZ) to a special event at the Darmstadt Forest Cemetery on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. Under the title "The Cemetery Lives – Interreligious Archegardens in Germany," an ecological excursion and a moth light show will take place. The goal is to make the connection between nature, religion, and urban space tangible and to demonstrate the importance of cemeteries as sites of biological diversity.
Excursion and moth lights
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. with an ecological and interreligious exploration under the motto "The Cemetery Lives ." The meeting point is the forecourt at the main entrance of the Forest Cemetery.
at 6:30 p.m., the "Butterfly Light" at the Muslim burial ground . With the help of a professional entomological light, the colorful diversity of local moths be illuminated. Participation is free, but registration is requested.
Cooperation and scientific background
The project is being implemented jointly with the Abrahamic Forum and the city of Darmstadt . It is part of the nationwide ITZ project "The Cemetery Lives – Interreligious Ark Gardens in Germany ," which is funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Environment and Development .
The project receives support from, among others, the University of Münster (Institute for Landscape Ecology, Center for Islamic Theology) and the University of Potsdam (School of Jewish Theology).

- 💡 Please bring: sturdy shoes, a flashlight, seating if necessary and food.
- 🔔 The butterfly glow only occurs when it is dry and there is (almost) no wind .
- Because of their tranquility and darkness, cemeteries are considered valuable urban habitats and places for extracurricular learning . This event invites visitors to explore ecological and cultural diversity together.
