Social criticism, symbolism and dark humor in the studio Bildwechsel
Under the title “uncovered”, Christel Funk will open an exhibition of her own acrylic paintings on June 14, 2025 at 5:00 pm in the Atelier Bildwechsel at Bessunger Straße 113 in Darmstadt.
Christel Funk's paintings are hardly conducive to a cheerful children's birthday party. If they were films, the German Voluntary Self-Regulation Body for Media would likely rate them as "Not suitable for children under 16." Funk's paintings reflect precisely what TV news and print magazines report about the state of the world: devastated landscapes, whether from war or climate change; dubious laboratories and gloomy catacombs; humanity as test subjects, refugees, victims of torture, and torturers—or as utterly petrified in a stony, urban Babylon. The world as one vast slaughterhouse. Not exactly palatable fare, to be sure. Political art? Certainly. But more than that.
Christel Funk's art goes far beyond meticulously painted realism, peppering current events with the surreal, the grotesque, and the enigmatic-symbolic, even with touches of pitch-black humor. In this way, she gets under our skin as well as behind the mere facade of things. (Roland Held)
The exhibition is open from June 14th to 29th, Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Mondays and Thursdays from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, and by appointment. The artist will be present during opening hours.
