Atelier Bildwechsel in Darmstadt presents works between reality and surrealism
Under the title "uncovered", Darmstadt artist Christel Funk her new exhibition at Atelier Bildwechsel , Bessunger Straße 113. On display are current works in acrylic that deal with the darker aspects of the present.
Christel Funk's works are not for the faint of heart. Her paintings address social and global crises – from war and climate change to laboratory and disaster scenarios, and on to alienation, violence, and displacement. Surreal and symbolic elements collide with disturbingly realistic motifs, often oscillating between social commentary and dark humor.
Art critic Roland Held describes Funk's style as far removed from classical realism: her works are permeated with the grotesque, symbolism, and depth of field that "get under your skin and allow you to see behind the facade of things." The exhibition thus consciously positions itself as a critical commentary on our times, but beyond simplistic slogans – rather as an invitation to reflect on the world and humanity within it.
