Event on January 29th at the Catholic University Parish
In the run-up to the local elections, Catholic and Protestant organizations in Darmstadt are hosting a keynote address entitled "Christianity and Right-Wing Extremism: Discern the Spirits!" The event will take place on Thursday, January 29, at 7 p.m. at the Catholic University Parish in Darmstadt, located at Nieder-Ramstädter-Straße 30. Admission is free.
The speaker for the evening is Günter Harmeling, theologian and member of the Rhine-Main regional group of Pax Christi . The aim of the lecture is to shed light on how right-wing extremist groups appropriate and reinterpret Christian concepts and religious language for their ideology. At the same time, participants will be sensitized to dealing with anti-democratic positions and strengthened in their argumentation skills.
Churches take a clear stance against right-wing extremism
Far-right parties and groups are increasingly attempting to instrumentalize religious concepts and theological motifs for their political goals. The German Bishops' Conference Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany also clearly distances itself from far-right positions and parties.
With this keynote address, the organizers aim to contribute to political education and provide space for information, exchange and critical discussion.
