Special guided tour on December 17th with Dr. Thomas Foerster and Carina Koch
On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 6 p.m., the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt invites you to a special Christmas tour. Dr. Thomas Foerster and Carina Koch will focus on two impressive altarpieces in the Picture Gallery, offering an art historical perspective on the depiction of the Incarnation of Christ one week before Christmas Eve.
The focus is on the altarpieces created for the Benedictine monastery of Seligenstadt and the fully preserved Wolfskehl Altarpiece. Both works were created over 500 years ago and show how believers in the region understood and depicted the Holy Night and the birth of Jesus. The depictions convey not only religious messages but also insights into the visual language and belief system of that time.
Furthermore, the guided tour connects to other works of art from the printmaking of the early 16th century. Many motifs from these prints were skillfully incorporated and further developed in the two altarpieces.
Participation costs €8, or €5 for concessions, plus a €4 guided tour fee. The number of participants is limited to 25. Tickets are available online or at the museum ticket office.
