Especially at the start of the holidays and after the New Year, traffic jams are likely on motorways.
The Christmas holidays are approaching and, as in previous years, will bring increased traffic on German motorways . According to Autobahn GmbH, are expected, particularly at the start of the holidays and around New Year's main routes to ski resorts will be especially affected .
While overall traffic volume during the Christmas holidays is lower than during the summer holidays, the fact that many German states start and end their holidays at roughly the same time means that travel is concentrated into just a few days. Additionally, winter weather conditions such as snow or ice can exacerbate the traffic situation.
Highest risk of traffic jams at the start of the holidays
The peak of the first travel wave is expected as early as Friday, December 19th . On this day, travel will begin immediately after school lets out and coincide with the evening rush hour , significantly increasing the risk of traffic jams. Traffic will remain heavy on Saturday, December 20th , as many travelers begin their short breaks. The traffic situation should ease somewhat Sunday, December 21st
Quiet holidays, more traffic between Christmas and New Year's.
On Christmas Eve (December 24th) as well as on the first and second Christmas holidays (December 25th and 26th), traffic experts expect a largely relaxed traffic situation without major traffic jams.
Traffic is expected to increase again on Saturday, December 27 , as many people use the time between the holidays to visit family and friends. Sunday, December 28 , is also likely to see somewhat heavier traffic. However, lighter traffic is expected New Year's Eve (December 31)
Return travel begins in early January
With the new year, the return travel season . Slightly increased traffic is expected New Year's and Friday, January 2nd Saturday, January 3rd , is considered particularly prone to traffic jams, while slightly increased traffic is expected again Sunday, January 4th the school holidays in some German states, are possible again on Tuesday, January 6th . After that, the situation is expected to return to normal.
