District Administrator Will honors the most diligent team in the Groß-Gerau district
As the district of Groß-Gerau reports, District Administrator Thomas Will presented the prize for the most active school team in this year's city cycling competition to the Max-Planck-School in Rüsselsheim on Monday in the presence of Mayor Murat Karakaya and Headmaster Marc Rhein.
The Max Planck School is far ahead
518 students participated in the event from May 18th to June 7th, 2025, securing first place in the category "School with the most participants". The team cycled a total of 34,093 kilometers – a significant portion of the 224,441 kilometers cycled by all school teams from 18 schools in the district.
"More than a quarter of all kilometers cycled are attributable to students," said District Administrator Will. Cycling is an ideal means of transport for getting to school safely. Those who use bicycles are simultaneously doing something for the climate and their own health, and can avoid relying on the bus or being driven by their parents. Will also reminded everyone not to forget their helmets when cycling.
Participation throughout the entire district – over 847,000 kilometers collected
The Groß-Gerau district participated in the international climate protection campaign "City Cycling" for the eleventh time this year. All 14 municipalities in the district were represented by their own teams. A total of 253 teams with 5,631 cyclists took part. Together, they cycled 847,451 kilometers – which, assuming car journeys were replaced, corresponds to a CO₂ saving of approximately 139 tons.
Prize money for the three strongest schools
District Administrator Will congratulated the Max Planck School and presented them with the winning check for 250 euros. The money can be used, for example, to set up or expand a school bicycle workshop.
- 2nd place: Bürgermeister-Klingler-Schule (Mörfelden-Walldorf) – 384 participants – 150 euros
- 3rd place: Martin-Niemöller-School (Riedstadt) – 305 participants – 100 euros
“Your motivation inspires other schools to integrate cycling into everyday school life and thus contribute to the transport revolution,” said District Administrator Will.
