Fewer hot days, but warm winters drive up average temperatures
The year 2024 was once again warmer and wetter than the long-term average in Darmstadt. The Statistics and Urban Research Department of the City of Darmstadt has published figures and trends concerning the city's climate in the current issue of "Statistics Update 1/2025".
According to this data, the average annual temperature in 2024 was 11.5 degrees Celsius – one degree above the average for the reference period of 1991 to 2020. Remarkably, despite 34 summer days (daily highs above 25 °C), the annual maximum temperature was rather low at 34.5 °C . The temperature increase was primarily due to the mild winter months , especially February, which, with an average temperature of 5.1 degrees, was significantly above the long-term average.
Precipitation also shows a unique trend: at 834.1 millimeters, the annual amount was significantly above average. However, unlike in 2023, the rainfall was distributed more evenly throughout the year, which is also reflected in the reduced number of dry days (176) . Only the end of the year was comparatively dry.
