City council gives the green light for the next project phase by 2027
With the unanimous decision of the city council of May 22, 2025, an important milestone for the climate quarters "Downtown-North" is achieved: the measures timetable is and marks the transition from concept development to practical implementation. The aim of the project is to make the central Griesheim residential area climate -friendly and future -proof - as a model for the entire urban area.
"The pressure to act for more green and egg seal is great - but the implementation is very challenging due to tight street rooms and the parking space requirement," explains project manager Lukas Reinelt. The measures timetable now provides a clear structure of how Griesheim wants to implement the next steps with the support of funding, especially from the Climate Plan Hesse .
Funding programs, greening, real laboratory
Among other things, are planned:
- A funding program for greening private land,
- Consulting offers for photovoltaics and energy efficiency,
- A real laboratory in the summer of 2026, in which parts of the city center are temporarily redesigned and used together with residents.
The funding application for the greening program is to be submitted to the State of Hesse in July 2025.
Citizen participation as a key
developed with the support of the service provider "Infrastructure & Environment" and in close cooperation with the state energy agency Hessen (Lea) The participation of the residents was also central: Citizens were able to contribute their ideas at the workshop on April 1. The catalog of measures remains open to future adjustments - further participation formats are planned by the end of the project in September 2027.
Downtown Nord as a model quarters
The “Downtown North” district is one of 15 funded model areas nationwide. It was selected due to its dense development, the high degree of sealing and missing city grasses. The neighborhood boundaries are Sandgasse in the north, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße in the east, Wilhelm-Leuschner-Straße in the south and the Schönenweibergasse in the west.
The project is financed by the Hessian Ministry of the Environment and coordinated by Lea Hessen. Further information on the state project "Climate quarters" is available on the website of the state energy agency Hessen:
