Odenwaldstrasse becomes part of a Hesse -wide pilot project
The district town of Groß-Gerau is one of the six Hessian municipalities that have been selected for the pilot project for the climate adjustable design of commercial areas. The aim is to adapt existing commercial space to climate change and to make them more resistant to extreme weather events.
The project is part of the EU funding program "IB-Green: Industrial and Commercial areas-climate silver and fit for the future" . The funding includes the assumption of consulting and planning costs for an external planning office. The specialist center climate change and adaptation (FZK) at the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) has started a promotion call in order to make commercial locations future -proof.
Climate adjustment in the Odenwaldstrasse industrial area
In Groß-Gerau, the Odenwaldstraße industrial area in the Dornberg district examined and further developed as part of the project. The area comprises 16.71 hectares and was mainly built on in the 1960s and 1970s . The effects of climate change are already visible today: heat waves, heavy rain, floods and storms have left damage to buildings, infrastructure and green spaces .
Commercial and industrial areas are often heavily sealed , which allows you to heat up to 80 degrees Celsius . In addition, there is often a lack of green and water areas that ensure natural cooling. The sewer system also quickly reaches its limits for heavy rain, which can lead to floods.
Climate-friendly measures for Groß-Gerau
In order to counteract these challenges, various measures be developed:
- Renaturation of waters to enable better water absorption in heavy rain
- Increasing the green share through new plantings to improve the microclimate
- Creation of shading structures to protect areas from strong heat
- Strengthening local public transport to reduce CO₂ emissions
- Development of a sustainable commercial concept to make companies economically and ecologically resistant
The Office for Urban Planning and Building Administration of the district town of Groß-Gerau develop concrete concepts for sustainable redesign of the commercial area together with experts, companies and other actors
Mayor Jörg Rüddenklau emphasizes: "With participation in this future -oriented project, we make an important contribution to sustainable urban development and make our commercial area more resistant to the consequences of climate change."
