The program "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities" enables tree planting until 2027.
The city of Griesheim has announced that it has been successfully accepted into the "Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities" (NKK) . This funding will enable extensive new tree plantings spring 2027 , as well as the improvement of existing tree locations April 2030 at the latest .
80 percent federal funding
The project is 80 percent funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety . These funds will allow for the implementation climate-friendly neighborhood as well as recommendations from the urban climate assessment
First tree plantings as early as 2025
Initial measures are expected to begin this year:
- New plantings in the street area
- Extension to small tree discs
- Improvement of existing locations
The aim is to improve the climate-regulating properties of sealed surfaces such as streets and squares, as these heat up significantly more than green spaces. Larger flowerbeds also provide sufficient root space and reduce damage to sidewalks and roadways.
The site selection is made within the city. Factors considered include utility lines, emergency exits, entrances and exits, sight lines, and parking availability.
Focus in the climate district
Especially in the climate-friendly district , where there are currently hardly any street trees, new locations are to be created. The city council has approved the establishment of:
- four tree beds in Hofmannstrasse
- two tree beds in the climate quarter
The decision has been made. These measures are planned for the planting season in autumn 2026 .
Furthermore, tree planting is planned for the end of November 2025 on the festival grounds , in the surrounding area, and on Zöllerplatz . Locations on Lindenstraße between Südring and Sterngasse are to be improved.
Multi-stage implementation with citizen participation
The project will be implemented in stages. Suggestions from the public be taken into account. Further consultations will address, among other things, the future use of squares and green spaces, as well as parking issues.
