The goal is always to maintain existing local supply locations
With the closure of a Netto branch in Darmstadt's Woogsviertel district, Mayor and Head of Economic Affairs Hanno Benz has once again emphasized the importance of a well-functioning local supply infrastructure in the city's districts and announced his support and mediation.
“Our economic development office is currently working with the parties involved to determine the exact situation and mediate. Even though Netto itself will no longer operate the store and the closure at the end of March has now been confirmed, we want to convince the owner to ensure the continued availability of local shopping options when leasing the space. Therefore, we are in contact with the owners and hope for a successful outcome.” Mayor Hanno Benz continued: “My overarching goal as Head of Economic Affairs is always to preserve existing local shopping options in all districts of Darmstadt. We want to achieve this goal here as well, just as we did with the former Rewe supermarket on Schwarzer Weg.”
In general, the local supply situation in the Woogsviertel district has been declining in recent years. Everyday necessities, and especially butchers and bakeries, are often only found in central locations. The network of bank and post office branches is also shrinking. This poses a significant obstacle for elderly or mobility-impaired individuals. "Fortunately, there is another shopping option just 500 meters from the Netto City branch on Roßdörfer Straße. This ensures that the range of services doesn't disappear completely. The goal now is to prevent the closure of this shopping option if at all possible."
